Athens, Greece – November 26, 2025 — Athens is preparing to transform the heart of Kifisia into a pioneering centre for healthy urban living, as construction begins on the city’s first Smart Wellness Park, scheduled to open in spring 2026. The project, part of the wider Residents’ Wellbeing Initiative, aims to redefine public spaces by merging advanced technology, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.
Spanning over 18 hectares adjacent to the historic Kifisia Park, the new development will feature a network of interactive fitness trails equipped with intelligent guidance systems. These trails, designed in collaboration with local sports scientists and digital engineers, will offer real-time feedback on exercise routines, adapting to individual fitness levels and goals. Visitors will be able to access personalised workout plans and track their progress using discreet wearable devices, with data privacy and user autonomy at the forefront of the design.
“We envisioned a space where technology enhances—not replaces—the natural experience,” explained Dr. Eleni Papadopoulou, lead urban planner for the project. “Our goal is to encourage Athenians to embrace movement and mindfulness in a setting that feels both innovative and deeply connected to nature.”
The park’s eco-friendly cafés, set to open alongside the main facilities, will serve locally sourced, organic fare with a focus on plant-based menus and zero-waste operations. Solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems will supply the cafés’ energy and water needs, while composting stations and reusable packaging aim to eliminate single-use plastics. The design team has partnered with several Athens-based environmental groups to ensure the cafés meet rigorous sustainability standards.
For residents of Kifisia and the wider Athens area, the Smart Wellness Park promises more than just a place to exercise or relax. Community organisers are planning a year-round calendar of wellness workshops, nutrition seminars, and outdoor yoga sessions, all offered free of charge. Local schools will be invited to participate in educational programmes focused on environmental stewardship and healthy living, while seniors will benefit from tailored mobility classes and guided walks.
“Public spaces should nurture every member of the community,” said Maria Kanelopoulou, president of the Kifisia Residents’ Association. “This initiative brings together innovation and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone—from children to retirees—can enjoy the benefits of active, sustainable living.”
The park’s landscape architects have drawn inspiration from Kifisia’s botanical heritage, integrating native Mediterranean plants and pollinator-friendly gardens throughout the site. A central plaza will host the annual Kifisia Flower Show, which celebrated its 70th edition this year, further strengthening the neighbourhood’s reputation as a hub for horticultural excellence. Water features, shaded seating areas, and accessible pathways will ensure the park remains welcoming and comfortable year-round.
City officials anticipate that the Smart Wellness Park will serve as a blueprint for future urban developments across Greece. By combining digital innovation with ecological responsibility, Athens aims to address contemporary health challenges while fostering a culture of wellbeing and resilience.
The project has garnered support from both municipal authorities and private partners, with funding secured through a combination of local government grants and contributions from technology and hospitality firms. Construction is set to begin in January 2026, with the first phase—including the AI fitness trails and two flagship cafés—expected to be completed by May.
In anticipation of the opening, a series of public consultations and design workshops will be held throughout 2025, inviting residents to share their ideas and priorities. Feedback from these sessions will inform the final layout and programming, ensuring the park reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of the Kifisia community.
As Athens continues to evolve, the Smart Wellness Park stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to progressive urban planning and holistic wellbeing. By fostering collaboration between technologists, environmentalists, and local residents, the initiative offers a glimpse into a future where public spaces inspire healthier, happier lives for all.
